Providing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) with an update of your new address in the US every time you move is required by law (see citation below). Each time you move, within ten (10) days of moving (even within Bloomington!), you are required to update the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) with your new address. To do this, your change of address must be submitted to the international office, who must update your address in SEVIS.
As an F-1 student, this is a fairly easy process. If you change your “Local” address in OneStart, the Office of International Services is notified that you have updated or added a “Local” address, and we will then submit your address change to USCIS through SEVIS.
To update or add your “Local” address, you will need to:
- Log onto Onestart.
-
Click on the
image to open the Student Center.
-
Scroll down to the “Personal Information” section, and select “Addresses” from the “other personal…” drop-down box. Click the
button to open your addresses.
- In the “Address Type” column, find “Local.” (If “Local” is not listed, click the “Add a New Address” button.)
- Enter your local address information, and then click the “OK” button.
-
If you clicked on “Add a New Address,”
- Select “Local” from the “Address Types” box.
- At the bottom right corner, choose the type of housing from the “Housing Code:” drop-down.
- Click the green “Save” button.
- Click “OK.”
You need to be sure to enter a “Local” address, because that is the address that will be sent to SEVIS.
If you find that you are unable to update or add your “Local” address in OneStart, you may log into iStart and submit an E-Form to update your local address. But begin with OneStart before submitting your request to iStart.
While you are on OPT (Optional Practical Training), you are still required to update your address within ten (10) days of moving, each time you move. Log into OneStart to update your “Local” address!
Regulatory citation for the change of address requirement:
The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) is a law that governs immigration in the United States. For the part of the law concerning reporting of your address and for the penalties if you do not comply, please see INA §265 and 266. The specific requirements for reporting your change of address are federal regulations found in 8 CFR Part 265 and at 67 Federal Register 52584, 52592 (to be codified at 8 CFR §264.1(f)(6) (concerning designated special registrants)).
INA (Immigration and Nationality Act) Section 265(a) reads:
Each alien required to be registered under this subchapter who is within the United States shall notify the Attorney General in writing of each change of address and new address within ten days from the date of such change and furnish with such notice such additional information as the Attorney General may require by regulation.
If you are an alien physically present in the US, then you are required to be registered (e.g. to have an I-94 card or similar document confirming status), and you are required to make address reports as specified in the law.
